CDC Requires Legionella Water Management Programs in Healthcare Facilities and High Rise Buildings
In June 2017 the Centers for Disease Control issued new guidelines for prevention of Legionella growth in commercial buildings and health care facilities.  According to the CDC, the number of U.S. deaths from Legionnaires disease has quadrupled (4x) since 2000.  Because of this, the CDC  requires owners of high rise buildings (>10 stories), health care, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and any facilities housing persons over 65 years of age to:
  • Identify building water systems where Legionella control measures are needed
  • Assess how much risk the hazardous conditions in those water systems pose
  • Apply control measures to reduce the hazardous conditions, whenever possible, to prevent Legionella growth and spread
  • Ensure the program is running as designed and is effective.
These new requirements go far beyond testing cooling towers and other sources of aerosolized water.  They involve a comprehensive survey of all water systems (e.g. heaters, piping, outlets), and active assessment and risk management wherever Legionella bacteria can reside, grow and proliferate.

Dr. Lynch Called Upon to Investigate Building Related Illness in Antigua
When employees in an Antigua office building reported extreme fatigue, headache and respiratory distress, the Antigua government contacted Dr. Richard M. Lynch, Ph.D., CIH to investigate.  Lynch interviewed employees, collected air quality measurements, mold and chemical samples and conducted an HVAC assessment to aid the employer in determining any potential building-related conditions.
The findings from the investigation highlight the major causes of Sick Building Syndrome and Building Related Illness which are commonly encountered, as well as some unique building management practices particular to that area.

 Factors that commonly impact air quality include:

In June 2017, we reported that Dr. Lynch co-authored an article in the May/June Issue of “School Leader” addressing the technical challenges with managing mercury containing rubberized gym floors in one school district.
Dr. Lynch also designed specifications for safe removal of the mercury containing rubberized floor coverings from gym floors and is currently overseeing removal of these floors.  Through this, we have specialized knowledge of the characteristics of these rubberized gym floors and strategies for addressing them including safe removal techniques and testing and validation protocols.
